Oh Really?

So I’ve been doing some character work for my WIP recently.  I continue to be amazed at what I don’t knowsbi pens&pad about a character and what I do know.  For example, this past weekend I was trying to fill out some character sheets and discovered I had no idea what my Main Character actually does for a living.  I mean…I had this loose idea but in the end…I hated my loose idea.  It was so cliched.  So I sat there…staring at the screen baffled trying to figure out how she paid her damn rent.  The process of sitting there and coming up with and discarding ideas was both fun and frustrating.  Then a couple of ideas stuck…and I realized she doesn’t have ONE job…she has a few jobs.  None of them great but all of them allowing her some flexibility of schedule and contact with a few different types of environments and social/class structure.

The flip side of this experience was when I was working on another character and actually cracked myself up when I realized that the strip club owned by this particular character was partially financed by his Granny.  Sometimes this stuff is really fun and funny.

So…you got any surprising character stories?  Times when your characters surprised you or pissed you off?

When I do character sheets, I always make sure the lowest Attribute is at LEAST an 11, or I reroll the character. I mean, giant Strength is useless if you don’t have the Dexterity to get out of the way of a trap or dragon’s breath.

I learn so much from doing interviews with my characters…they tell me all sorts! Some of it I don’t even want to know…but it might be useful somewhere!

So true Lisa! It’s fun and strange and you never know when one of those details is going to be really important so you had better know it. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
